A history teacher should provide students the opportunity to use history in the present as a tool to address the injustices of the past. Over the past 20 years of his career, the best moments in Mr. Stevens' classroom have been when the students have used history to better understand and address the injustices of the past. Or as historian Howard Zinn said, “The most revolutionary act someone can engage in is...to tell the truth [about the past].”
Mr. Stevens always enjoyed being both a student and teacher of history. It was through what he learned from several great professors he had at Catholic University, Washington, D.C., however, that he realized how important it is to teach students how to interpret history so that it is personally relevant to their current situation.
He received his Master of Arts in American history from Catholic University in 2010.
